Dan DeVane serves as the department's chief operating officer, supporting Secretary Tippett's transportation agenda and managing the department's daily operations. From 1994 to 2008, DeVane served the department as chief deputy secretary, deputy secretary for human resources and intergovernmental affairs, and legislative liaison.

Prior to joining the department, DeVane served as a member of the N.C. House of Representatives for 11 years and a Hoke County commissioner for six years. He also served as chairman of the Region N Council of Governments. He is a former member of the National Guard and a retired volunteer fireman.
