Foreword: Transportation Alternatives
For many North Carolinians, operating a vehicle may be too costly, inconvenient or dangerous. The North
Carolina Department of Transportation wants you to know there are many transportation alternatives to driving.
In our society, we often overlook our options to walk, ride a bicycle, carpool and use public transportation.
Public transportation could be your best alternative to driving. Some form of public transportation is
available in most areas of the state. In the larger, metropolitan areas there are bus systems that operate
on regular routes. Smaller, rural areas may provide coordinated van services for citizens. In either case,
public transportation is available and equipped to accommodate disabled persons.
