Civilian Renewal by Mail Info.
The Division reviews each renewal by mail request on an individual basis.
The following criteria MUST be met before we can issue a renewal license by mail:
- Must have an image (picture) on file
- Must have a valid driver status...license not expired over 1 year
- Must have a Social Security Number or documentation issued by the United States Government indicating legal presence on file.
- Must have a NC verifiable residence address
We can renew a driver license one time via mail and you can renew up to 6 months in advance.
There are several circumstances that prohibit the Division from issuing a license by mail -
- Unable to renew a commercial license (CDL) via mail
- Unable to upgrade from Level 3 to original via mail
- Unable to downgrade from a CDL to a classified "C" unless the classified "C" on the driver record
has not expired beyond one year
- Unable to change name or medical/vision/class/statutory restrictions that appear on the face of a driver license or driving record via mail.
North Carolina General Statute 20-7(i) states the cost per year of issuance for all driver licenses. A license renewed via mail is subject to the same cost and length of renewal as a license renewed in person. The law does not provide for a pricing standard other than what the statutes allow. The Division does not prorate the cost of a license or length of a renewal cycle based on one’s personal needs.
