The following criteria MUST be met before we can issue a renewal license by mail:

• Must have an image (picture) on file
• Must have a valid driver status...license not expired over 1 year
• Must have a Social Security Number or documentation issued by the United States Government indicating legal presence on file.
• Must have a NC verifiable residence address

We can renew a driver license two consecutive times via mail and you can renew up to 12 months in advance.

There are several circumstances that prohibit the Division from issuing a license by mail -

• Unable to renew a commercial license (CDL) via mail
• Unable to downgrade from a CDL to a classified "C" unless the classified "C" on the driver record has not expired beyond one year
• Unable to change the name via mail
