Emissions Fees

If you live in an Emissions County, the total cost of an emissions inspection can range from $6.25 to $30.00.

The fee breakdown for Vehicle Inspections is as follows:

Vehicle Inspection Fee
Emissions Inspection
Inspection Fee $6.25
Station Labor Fee $0.00 - $23.75
Safety Inspection
Regular Safety Inspection for ALL Counties $13.60
Inspection Fee $0.85
Station Labor Fee $12.75
Window Tint in Safety/Emissions Counties $10.00

The Inspection fee/Station Labor fee, which may range from $0 - $23.75, is the actual fee for performing the inspection regardless of whether your vehicle passes inspection or not.

The fee breakdown for the $6.25 Inspection is as follows:

Breakdown of $6.25 Inspection Fee Fee
Emissions Program Account (Non-reverting account within Highway Fund) $3.00
Volunteer Rescue/EMS Fund $0.18
Highway Fund $0.55
Telecommunication Account $1.75
Rescue Squad Workers' Relief Fund $0.12
Highway Trust Fund $0.00
Division of Air Quality $0.65
Total $6.25

Cost for an Emissions Inspection

If your vehicle is registered in one of the 48 emission control counties, the total cost for a passed emission inspection $30.00: $23.75 for the safety/emissions inspection and $6.25 for the inspection fee. A safety-only inspection in a non-emission county (or for a vehicle older than a 1996 model year in an emission county) is $13.60: $12.75 for the safety inspection and $.85 for the inspection fee.

Inspection Locations

Inspections are available at any properly licensed and equipped safety-only, or safety/OBD station. The station will perform the inspection required for your particular vehicle and issue an authorization showing that your vehicle has been inspected. Because inspection stations are privately-owned facilities and North Carolina's Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) Program operates within a decentralized network, it is not mandatory for a station to be OBD-licensed or equipped. However, a station or mechanic can only perform the type of emissions test for which he/she is certified (e.g., Safety, Safety/OBD). A list of inspection stations by county that includes the types of inspections they are licensed and equipped to perform can be found online at https://apps.dot.state.nc.us/dmv/emissions/.
