  Queue Naming

The new IT naming convention also affects the Microsoft/Window's queues. The new names, (Division/Unit Designation-Asset#), will have the asset number as part of the queue name, i.e.

D5-185901 => Division 5, Asset# 185901, Microsoft queue
D5-185901ps => Division 5, Asset# 185901, Postscript queue
D5R1-186901 => Division 5, Construction Office#1, Asset# 186901, Microsoft queue
D5D1-187901ps => Division 5, District Office#1, Asset# 187901, Postscript queue

The queue's Comment field will include the Type of queue, i.e., (Microsoft, or Postscript), Model of Printer/Plotter (HP 4mv, HP 800ps), and Location. The Location data is a duplicate of the Location field to provide the user a good description that the user will see when connecting - START - RUN - \\D#CADSRV
The Location field is not seen with this connection method, only the Comment field is seen. That's why the Location data is duplicated.

After the image is loaded the queues will have to be renamed and directed to the correct ip address for your printers/plotters in your Division. There are queues for most of the types of printers and plotters in the divisions. Follow these instructions.

1. Go into Printers and select File, Server Properties. Choose the Port tab, Select Add Port, Select LPR Port, Select New Port. Enter the ip address of the printer/plotter. Set Printer/Queue Name to raw. Repeat this to add all the ip addresses for the printers/plotters in your Division.

2. Back in the Printers folder, Select one of the existing queues for the type of printer to be set up. Right click, and Select Properties, Select Sharing and unselect Share as, and hit Apply

3. Select General and rename the queue to the naming convention mentioned. It will be a change in unit/division designation and asset number for Microsoft and Postscript queues. For Iplot queues, it will a change in unit/division designation only. Hit Apply.

4. Select Sharing and select Share as, and hit Apply. Make sure the share name matches the queue name, no letters dropped.

5. Select General and change the Location and Comment fields to describe the printer being set up. Hit Apply.

An example of a Division plot server printer folder would look like this. Not in this order.

Repeat for each District and Resident office in your Division. For a queue that has to be made follow use the example queues as a guide.

The most important is the queue properties Device Settings - Interplot Device Attributes page.

  • Set paper size and resolution for 4mv's to a or b size and 300dpi for 4mv's, 5000 printers.
  • Set paper type and size to coated and 35.31x600 for 600/700/650/750 and 35.6x1800 for 500/800 plotters with 36" paper.
  • Check the START - Programs - Interplot Utilities - Graphical Attribute Editor - OK - File - Open Default, default settings for each Iplot queue and change if needed to match your old plot server queue setting. Save As Default the setting if change is made.

    Note - If your division uses settings files with queue names, modify the queue names to match the new names in your Workspace folder.

    I hope this will allow any user to locate and know what kind of print queue they are connecting to and using (Microsoft queues have an asset# and Iplot queues have model# in it's queue name).

    If you have any questions or problems during this transition, please call Dee Wilcox at 919-250-4177 x243. You may also call the DOT Help Desk and refer problem to CADD Services.
