Project Opportunities

There are three main ways for highway contractors to take part in DOT projects:

Transportation Improvement Program (TIP):

TIP projects are centrally let from Raleigh. The projects can take up to several months to complete. The Board of Transportation approves these projects at their monthly meetings. Click here to view the letting list for each month. Select "Invitations to Bid" to see the description and line items of each project. You can also check to see who has requested plans if you select "Plan Holders List" and then enter a contract number.

To navigate the letting list, note the following:

  • The letting dates are listed in the middle of the page.
  • Invitations to Bid - Describes certification requirements, how to purchase the DOT spec book and gives line item quantities for each project in that month's letting
  • Plans, Proposals and Addendums - Gives detailed information on drawings and specifications for each project
  • Plan Holder List - Lists the contractors who have received drawings and specifications for that month's projects
  • Letting List - A brief list of each project in the letting (county, length, route, description of work)
  • Item C Sheet - A list of the projects with descriptions, DBE goals and a summary of the prime contractors

Purchase Order Contracts (PO's):

Purchase Order projects are smaller than TIP projects. Sometimes Purchase Order contracts are designated for SBEs (Small Business Enterprises) only. These projects originate from the division offices. Click here to access purchase order information. Select the division you'd like to see and look for "Current Bid Requests" to find those projects.

Fully Owned Rental Equipment (FORE):

This program allows a contractor to sign a contract to offer the use of their equipment/and or manpower to the DOT on an as needed basis. To learn more about this program contact the division office in your area.
