Subcontractors are firms that submit bids to prime contractors who are bidding on Department Centrally-let projects (projects that are statewide, but are let out of Raleigh). Before beginning work, subcontractors must be prequalified by the NCDOT. A firm that is not prequalified as a subcontractor will not be allowed to begin work on a Department project until they become prequalified. Once prequalified, firms must requalify every three (3) years, but must also renew their status annually. The purpose of the annual renewal is to make sure the Department has a current Safety Index on file.

Firms that are approved as subcontractors may also bid as a prime contractor on purchase order contracts that are let through the Division offices. Firms must be prequalified by the NCDOT prior to submitting their bid on these type of projects. If you wish to bid on projects over $300,000 as a prime contractor, proof of bonding capability will be required. The same requirements requalifying and renewing as a subcontractor as listed above remain the same.

Once your firm is approved, you will show up in the Department's Directory of Transportation Firms as a "subcontractor". Firm's that are already prequalified as bidders or prime contractors may also perform work on Department projects as a subcontractor, and do not need to complete the Subcontractor Approval Form.
