Subcontractors are firms that submit bids to prime contractors who are bidding on Department Centrally-let projects (projects that are statewide, but are let out of Raleigh). Before beginning work, subcontractors must be prequalified by the NCDOT. A firm that is not prequalified as a subcontractor will not be allowed to begin work on a Department project until they become prequalified. Once prequalified, firms must requalify every three (3) years, but must also renew their status annually. The purpose of the annual renewal is to make sure the Department has a current Safety Index on file.

Once your firm is approved, you will show up in the Department's Directory of Transportation Firms as a "subcontractor". Firm's that are already prequalified as bidders or prime contractors may also perform work on Department projects as a subcontractor, and do not need to complete the Subcontractor Approval Form. You can access the Directory of Transportation Firms by clicking on Contractor Directory under Navigation to the left.

However, it is recommended that you try to use the Online Prequalification System prior to downloading and submitting the paper application.
