Central Issuance of Driver Licenses:
Lillington Pilot Program:
Beginning in Lillington on July 1, 2008, the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles will begin changing from “over-the-counter” to “central issuance” of driver licenses.
The Lillington DMV Office will be the first in the state to participate in the program, which will be expanded to DMV offices throughout North Carolina soon.
Instead of receiving your driver license at the DMV office after you complete your test and photo, you will instead receive a Temporary Driving Certificate valid for 20 days. You may keep your current license to use for photo identification until your new one arrives by mail within 20 days.
This new requirement was passed into state law by the General Assembly in July 2006. It is meant to help stop identity theft and fraud by further strengthening and safeguarding the production, manufacture and issuance of North Carolina driver licenses.
Driver licenses will be produced in one central location, at the Raleigh DMV Headquarters, rather than in 114 different locations around the state, improving the security of production materials and equipment.
