License Renewal / Replacement
Your license will be issued for a period of 5 or 8 years depending on your age. Ages 18 through 53 will be issued for 8 years. Ages 54 and older will be issued for 5 years. The cost of your license and any endorsements will be computed based on the yearly charge.
Renewal:
Before your license expires, the DMV will mail you a reminder card explaining the number of years it will be valid. The card is not required in order to renew. If you do not have your current or expired license at renewal, you will be required to show the examiner two documents of identification. See the below link for more specific documentation and requirements information.
Requirements
The vision and traffic sign recognition tests are always required for a license renewal. The road test requirement is at the discretion of the Examiner.
Note:You may renew your license by mail if you are temporarily residing outside North Carolina for 30 or more days or if you are serving in the armed forces on active duty and are stationed outside the state. The license issued will be temporary and will expire five years from renewal on your birthday or 60 days after you return to North Carolina, whichever date occurs first.
Replacement
If your license is lost or stolen, go to the nearest Driver License Office
and apply for a duplicate. To replace a lost or stolen license, you must show the examiner two documents of
identification approved by the DMV.
