MOVING? >  Leaving North Carolina: What do I need to do?
spacer

What do I need to do?

Don’t make the mistake of canceling your vehicle liability insurance coverage before surrendering your license plate to your nearest DMV agency. This will help you avoid a civil penalty of $50 for failure to maintain continuous insurance coverage. North Carolina law requires you to have liability coverage in effect on your vehicle during the entire time it is registered and the license plate is in your possession.

Return the plate to the DMV Vehicle Registration Section, Mail and Distribution Unit, 3148 Mail Service Center, 1100 New Bern Avenue, Raleigh, N.C. 27699-3148. If the vehicle is registered in another state make sure you indicate that. If the plate has not expired, the owner should ask for a receipt. Contact the Vehicle Registration Section at (919) 715-7000, and a printout of your receipt will be mailed to you at no fee. You can also obtain a printout at your local license plate office or tag agent office.

Driver License and ID cards

It is unlawful to retain a driver license from more than one state. If you change your home state of residence, after moving, it is necessary that you apply for a driver license in that State and surrender your North Carolina driver license to the proper authorities in that State. Your new home state will advise the Division that you are now licensed in another State. You should also surrender your identification card to the proper authorities in your new home once you have moved. If it is the issuing state's procedures not to accept identification cards, then forward the card to the Division at the below address explaining that you are no longer a resident of North Carolina. NCDMV, Driver License Section, 3120 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-3120.
