What do I need to do?

When moving within North Carolina you will need to apply for a duplicate driver license. And in the event that you move to a county that requires "Emissions Testing" you will need to have your vehicle inspected.
Apply for a Duplicate Driver License:

return to top

A customer may request a duplicate driver license on-line. Use "Click@DMV", and click the "Duplicate License" link which takes you to our "On-line Duplicate Driver License Site. A customer may request a duplicate driver license for the following reasons:

  • to replace a lost or stolen license
  • to change a residence and or mailing address
  • to replace a license that is defaced or damaged

A fee of $10.00 is charged. A duplicate license with the most recent photo on it is mailed to the customer.

If your address changes from the address stated on your driver license, you must notify the Division of Motor Vehicles within 60 days after the change occurs. If your address changed because you moved, you may visit a driver license office to obtain a duplicate license reflecting your new address or use "Click@DMV", and click the "Duplicate License" link. If you did not physically move, but your address changed because of governmental action, you should notify the DMV in Raleigh in writing of your new address.
