Title Fraud

The License and Theft Bureau examines vehicle titles and investigates vehicle fraud. Title Fraud can incorporate criminal activity such as changing the odometer statement, changing or removing leinholder information, removing flood or damage brands, and/or completely changing vehicle information that is represented on the title document. There is probably no way to be 100% certain that you have a proper title, but there are some signs to look out for.

Some "RED FLAGS" are:

  • The vehicle has an out of state title.

  • The vehicle was recently brought in to our state, and has just been issued a new North Carolina title.

  • The vin plate attached to the car shows signs of tampering, or is obscured from plain view.

  • The vehicle's history does not confirm what the seller has told you.

  • The lines and text on the title are not razor sharp.

Having more than one of these "RED FLAGS" on your title could be the sign of something particularly troublesome.

If you are suspicious about a vehicle title document contact one of our District Offices.
