Obtaining a License Plate?
To obtain a license plate within North Carolina visit one of our Vehicle & License Plate Renewal Offices

Follow the steps below to obtain a license plate within North Carolina:

When obtaining a license plate for a vehicle that is already in your name, you will first have
to provide a vehicle description. All this entails is bringing your title in or
providing your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

When obtaining your license plate and validation decals a registration fee of $28 for private
passenger automobiles is due. When obtaining your license plate and validation decals for a
private truck under 4,000 pound a registration fee of $28 is due. License plate fees for
other types of vehicles are based upon plate classification.

Regional Transportation Authority Registration Tax:
|
The Regional Transportation Authority Registration Tax ($5.00) applies to vehicles registered in
Wake, Durham and Orange Counties. Residents applying for title and license in WAKE, DURHAM
and ORANGE Counties must pay an additional $5.00 for funding of the Regional Transportation
Authority.
The additional $5.00 fee is due on the following vehicle classifications:
- Private Passenger Vehicles
- Private Motorcycles
- U-Drive It Passenger Vehicles
- Limousine Vehicles
- Common Carriers, Contract Carriers
- Exempt For-Hire Passenger Carrier Vehicles
- Property Hauling (farm vehicles)
- Manufacturer & Motor Vehicle Dealers

Insurance requirements within North Carolina require that you provide a proof of insurance
when obtaining your license plate.
Acceptable proofs of insurance include:
- Owner provides insurance company name and policy number (Self Certification)
- or a Certificate of Insurance (FS-1), obtained from an Insurance Company that is licensed to do
business in North Carolina.
Minimum Liability Insurance Requirements for Licensing:

The minimum requirements of liability insurance for a private passenger vehicle is $30,000
for bodily injury for one person; $60,000 bodily injury for two or more people and $25,000
property damage. North Carolina law requires each company to notify the DMV when coverage
has been cancelled.

The IRS requires:
Purchasers of imported heavy vehicles to pay a 12% Federal Excise Tax to the IRS.
Filing of Heavy Highway Use Tax Returns electronically for taxpayers who register 25 or more vehicles.

Methods of Payment
We will accept cash, money order or checks with two (2) forms of ID. Checks will need to be written in Blue or Black ink. We do not accept starter checks. For further information concerning check verification, call 919-715-7000.
