Do I need to register this type of vehicle?

Within North Carolina there are instances of vehicles that do not have to be registered, either for highway safety reasons or in some cases the vehicle may not even be registered with the DMV.
ATVs:

All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) are usually manufactured for off road use. The vehicles generally do not meet the normal DOT safety standards. The manufacturers state that even if conforming tires were place on the motorcycle, that the suspensions and other design features are meant for low-pressure tires, so placing different tires on the vehicle does not allow it to meet safety standards.

A title or license cannot be issued unless an inspector's report is received confirming that the vehicle is equipped for road use and meets all DOT safety standards.

Mobile Homes:

To register a Mobile Home from a Manufacturer's Certificate of Orgin (MCO) or title the following things are required:

  1. A pdf icon Title Application (MVR-1), with an MCO or title properly assigned to the purchaser.

  2. A $40.00 title fee.

  3. Mobile homes sold by a dealer are subject to a 2% sales tax with a $300.00 maximum. The sales tax is due on each section of a doublewide mobile home. The sales tax is paid to the dealer who then reports it to the Department of Revenue. If the mobile home was purchased from an individual or someone other than a dealer, no tax is due.

  4. If the owner wants to cancel the title to real estate at the time of registration, the following item is required.

    1. A pdf icon Cancellation of Mobile Homes (MVR- 46G) signed by the owner indicating the wheels and axles have been removed.

A title will be issued in the new owner's name and canceled when the vehicle is converted to real estate.

Canceling a North Carolina Title to Real Estate

The registered owner indicates on the face of the title "wheels and axles removed" and completes pdf icon Form MVR-46G (Cancellation of Mobile Homes).

Mopeds:

You must be age 16 or older to operate a moped on North Carolina highways or public vehicular areas. A driver license is not required, and the moped does not have to be registered, inspected or covered by liability insurance. A motorcycle safety helmet is required by law when operating a moped on North Carolina highways. A moped cannot have a motor of more than 50 cubic centimeters, an external shifting device or have the capability of exceeding 30 miles per hour on a level surface.
