All of NCDOT's aerial photography missions (approximately 7,000 missions) are archived in the Photographic Laboratory. The earliest missions were flown in 1958. The photo missions have typically been flown at altitudes ranging from 1,500 to 12,000 feet above mean terrain elevation.

The limits of each photo mission and the mission number are recorded in the photo mission map book . These books, containing mylar maps of our state, are maintained by the decade. The photo missions are separated by scale or ratio in each book.

Each photo mission is recorded in the photo index books. These books contain a print of the half size photos of the complete mission. Each mission can be loaded onto a light table half size photos and viewed in it's entirety, one aerial photo at a time.

Most of the photography is black and white, but some limited missions are in color or color infrared. The Photographic Laboratory can produce positives in the form of contact prints, enlargments, and reproductions in a variety of scales. Reproductions of existing NCDOT photography are available to anyone for a fee.

The Photogrammetry Unit's Photographic Laboratory is maintained and operated as a service to all state agencies and the general public.
