Garden Club Planting Near Haw Creek

The Beverly Hills Garden Club presented the NC Department of Transportation with three Cherokee Princess Dogwoods. Mrs. Lou Stauffer, President of the Beverly Hills Garden Club, assisted Mr. Jay Swain, Division Engineer, with the plantings on US 70 near Haw Creek and I-240.

The Roadside Environmental Unit is responsible for sedimentation and erosion control; vegetation management; highway beautification; and rest areas. Sedimentation and erosion control is the seeding, mulching, and installation of erosion control measures on contract and force account land disturbance activities. Vegetation management includes turf management, noxious weed control, and maintenance of visibility along the roadsides. Highway beautification consists of the Wildflower Program, enhancement plantings, and reforestation. The rest areas in Division 13 are maintained by contract and inspected by DOT personnel.
