Weir Sections for Check Dams

Problem: When a weir is installed at an elevation greater than or
equal to the surrounding topography, water will run around the
check dam and scour the side slopes of the drainage feature.
Also, if the weir elevation is not lower than an adjacent
roadway, then the check dam may divert water into the road.

Solution: The weir section of a check dam should be lower than
the adjacent ditch, shoulder or other topographic feature so to
encourage water to flow over the weir section rather than around
it.  Keep the stone elevation below the top slope of the ditch
and then create the weir.
