A Roadway Weather Information System is a collection of atmospheric and pavement
sensors used to monitor and identify weather-related events that may be conducive
to hazardous driving conditions, such as wind speed, visibility, road surface
temperature, and air moisture content. RWIS can respond by applying anti-icing
chemicals to the road or activating traveler information devices.

Reversible Lane Systems enable the maximum use of a roadway by changing the direction
of the individual travel lanes. Lane control signs, displayed well in advance of a
merge, are used to close lanes with lower traffic volume and open additional lanes
for higher volume.
