Transit Management Systems in Metropolitan areas have implemented fleet
management systems, including hardware/software components on buses and in dispatching
centers, software, available radio communications spectrum, operator training, and
maintenance. Depending on the needs, the fleet management system would utilize automatic
vehicle location, including advanced voice and data communications, automatic passenger
counting, driver information (voice and video), vehicle diagnostics, linkage to
Geographic Information Systems, and computer aided dispatching. These systems reduce
cost by improving efficiency while providing better information and service to travelers.

These systems often include interface with signal systems for priority. They also utilize
automatic fare payment hardware and software so riders can use many modes of travel with
only one fare payment card; no cash is required. Large transit management systems, such
as in Atlanta and many European cities, display real-time displays of arrival times, trip
times and interactive route planning.
