Inspection, which is headed up by Tim Earp, the Bridge Inspection Superintendent, is broken down into three sections, Abovewater, Underwater, and Special.

Abovewater inspection is administered by the three Area Bridge Inspection Supervisors. Each area has six 2 person inspection teams, consisting of a Bridge Inspector II (team leader) and a Bridge Inspector I. These inspectors are responsible for inspecting state maintained bridges in accordance with federal requirements. Each structure (bridges, pipes, culverts, ferry ramps, & tunnels) is inspected every two years. They are also responsible for checking vertical clearances for structures over traffic. Inspection reports include maintenance needs.

Underwater Inspection, under Jim Ahlmark , consists of four 3 person underwater inspection teams. These inspectors are responsible for inspecting state maintained bridges in accordance with federal requirements. 345 bridges are inspected on a two year cycle and 1783 are inspected on a four year cycle.

Special Inspection, under Michael McNeese, consists of four 2 person teams performing deck evaluations, pile length determination, inspection of 218 cantilever sign structures and 223 high mast lights every four years, inspection of 501 span type sign structures every eight years; and one 2 person team performing machinery inspections every two years for 16 movable span bridges, ultrasonic testing on 31 bridges every two years (other bridges as needed) and other non-destructive testing as needed.
