The Structure Inventory and Appraisal section, located in Raleigh, is responsible for maintaining the physical bridge files and a large mainframe computer database for all bridges in the State. All bridges are appraised based on criteria in the National Bridge Inspection Standards. Numerous reports, letters, and copies of inspections are generated and sent out. Notification of bridge weight limits and clearance restrictions are distributed by this section. The S I & A section operates the computer modules of the Bridge Management System.

Numerous statistical reports are provided to the public and other agencies from inquiries about bridges in North Carolina.
