CONTRACT RESURFACING

The Governor's Good Roads Program was established by the General Assembly under the 1981 Appropriations Act, Senate Bill 29, to fund 7.XX contract resurfacing work orders. Funds appropriated for fiscal year 1981-82 totaled $79,931,037. Funds appropriated for 2000-2001 totaled $137,481,982. Approximately 2,000 miles per year are resurfaced from this fund. Allocations are distributed by formula utilizing pavement maintenance needs, lane miles and population as factors in the formula. In accordance with current legislation, up to 15% of the funds may be used for widening narrow roads that are scheduled for resurfacing.

The State Road Maintenance Unit receives all contracts for contract resurfacing prior to the letting each month, including purchase order contracts. These contracts are analyzed for accuracy and proper formatting before being submitted for further processing. Reports are produced on contract accomplishment for the General Assembly, Board of Transportation, Chief Engineer of Operations, etc.
