The Skill Based Pay Program utilizes three different forms of training: traditional classroom training conducted by Department of Transportation training personnel, external training from agencies such as ITRE that may result in the issuance of a certification, and On The Job Training conducted by certified OJT instructors. All of these training formats emphasize both knowledge and skill development. Many different forms of testing instruments are utilized to determine the amount of knowledge gained and skills mastered. The program has established standards that must be attained in order to successfully pass the training. Some of the certifications that are issued have to be renewed periodically. Make sure you do not allow an active certification to expire. If a certification expires, you may have to complete the entire training course again in order to regain your certification. On The Job training is utilized extensively in developing both craft skills and safe operating skills when operating our equipment. Safety is extremely important not only to the equipment operator but also to the crew working near that piece of equipment. All OJT trainers are tested and certified in the safe and efficient operation of equipment before they begin their teaching responsibilities. The Department has established uniform standards that must be mastered in order to be considered competent. In addition to the demonstration of the established competencies, time frames may be imposed to ensure sufficient time to develop a proficiency in performing the learned skills.
