This year marks the 20th anniversary of the North Carolina Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) program. All the AAH volunteers have made a significant contribution to preserving the beauty and cleanliness of North Carolina's roadsides. N.C. is proud to have so many of its citizens involved in making North Carolina a better place to live.
Currently, there are some 6,000 AAH groups. This year North Carolina is saluting AAH groups that began in 1998, 1993 and 1988. During their continuous and consecutive years of service, they have kept their adopted roadway segments litter free.
N.C. is awarding each of these groups two green metallic stars for their roadside signs. The stars have the number 10, 15 or 20 in the center in recognition of the number of years that each volunteer group actively participated in the AAH program.
In addition, N.C. is also recognizing the AAH groups achieving 10 consecutive years of service, 1998 - 2008, by presenting them with a special plaque in appreciation of their efforts.
