| The key responsibilities of this group
are the development, implementation, and direction
of programs for the North Carolina Department of Transportation
(NCDOT) in the area of hazardous and solid waste management.
This group manages the comprehensive site assessment
and corrective actions that are required at former
contaminated asphalt plant and Superfund sites in
North Carolina.
Program activities in the area of hazardous waste
management includes: review of alternative products
and methods to minimize the amount of hazardous
waste generated; act as the key contact with the
NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources
- Divisions of Waste Management and Water Quality;
act as a resource for the NCDOT Division of Hazardous
Materials Managers and other key NCDOT personnel;
provide support to local governments, private interest
groups, other state and local agencies and the general
public; develop and implement pilot projects to
meet remediation goals; develop statewide waste
disposal contracts and select contractors; and comply
with all air and water requirements and necessary
permit conditions.
Comprehensive assessment includes: conduct engineering
and technical studies on controlling pollution;
develop department standards and operation procedures
for compliance with all related rules and regulations;
conduct Resources Conservation and Recovery Act
(RCRA) audits at NCDOT facilities; and develop in-house
RCRA training programs for waste management and
pollution control.
