Aerial Photography is photography taken from an aerial platform, usually an airplane. The
camera is pointed straight down to produce near vertical photos. The camera has a high geometric
quality lens and exposes a negative with a 9 inch X 9 inch format. The camera system is calibrated to allow
precise measurement of image features.
Typical photo scales range from 1:3,000 to 1:24,000.
Aerial photography is used to produce map products for transportation planning, design, construction,
and maintenance.
