| SUBJECT: | SOUND BARRIER WALL STANDARD DRAWINGS |
New standard drawings SBW1 and SBW2 (SBW1SM and SBW2SM) have been developed and are available for your immediate use. These drawings shall be used for projects with pile panel sound barrier walls. Upon completion of the plans for the wall, these two standards shall be transmitted to the Roadway Design Unit for inclusion in the Roadway Plans. Do not provide a wall envelope or layout for these walls, as they are already included in the Roadway Plans.
A category map is attached to establish the wind pressure for which the wall is designed. Include the corresponding pile selection table on Structure Standard SBW1 and delete the other pile selection tables. Note that for walls taller than 20 ft. (6 m) located in Region D, the piles shall be designed on a case-by-case basis.
The standard drawings allow the Contractor the option to use either a 10, 15, or 20 ft. (3.1, 4.6, or 6.1 m) pile spacing. To accommodate these alternates, provide panel reinforcement and drilled pier lengths for each pile spacing. The required horizontal reinforcement in the precast panels is provided in the attached design chart and shall be detailed on Structure Standard SBW2. For drilled pier lengths, submit three sets of loads to the Soils and Foundation Section along with a copy of the Roadway plan sheets that locate the wall. These loads may be calculated through the use of the attached design chart. These loads should not include the weight of the pile or the drilled pier.
Various turn details are provided. Delete those details that do not apply to the wall. If necessary, include the modified panel detail, and complete the dimensioning required for the blockout.
The Quantities for One Precast Panel tables shall be completed based on the "H" bar requirements. Do not compute the number or size of panels to be used in the wall. The area of sound barrier wall shall be estimated from the layout and envelope in the Roadway Plans. Report this area on Structure Standard SBW2.
This policy is effective with the August 2001 letting. The standard drawings are available on both the Sd drive (S:) and the Structure Design Homepage. The Design Manual and Project Special Provisions will be updated at a later date.
