| SUBJECT: | PAINT FOR PVC DECK DRAINS |
When deck drains are required on weathering steel grade separations, place the following note on the plans
PVC deck drains shall be painted with two coats of brown primer meeting the requirements of Article 1080-12 of the Standard Specifications. Each coat shall be 2 dry mils (0.050 mm) thick. Deck drains shall be roughened prior to painting. No separate payment shall be made for painting PVC deck drains as this is considered incidental to the pay item for Reinforced Concrete Deck Slab (Sand Lightweight Concrete).
This note shall also be used for weathering steel stream crossings where deck drains have a significant impact on bridge aesthetics.
When deck drains are required on painted steel grade separations, see Engineering Development for a slight adaptation to the above note.
The above note replaces the last note of Figures 6-15 and 6-17 of the Design Manual and renders obsolete the Special Provision "Paint for PVC Deck Drains".
This policy is effective with the January 2001 letting. The Design Manual and Special Provisions will be revised at a later date.
