| MEMORANDUM TO: | Project Engineers |

| FROM: | T. V. Rountree, P. E. |
| State Bridge Design Engineer | |
| DATE: | November 15, 2000 |
| SUBJECT: | DRILLED PIERS |
Numerous changes have been made to the pay items, standard notes and special provisions related to the construction and inspection of drilled piers. These changes will be effective with the March 2001 letting. All future Foundation Recommendations will reflect these changes. For previously received Foundation Recommendations, consult with the Soils and Foundation Section regarding necessary adjustments to pay items and plan notes, if any.
At the request of the Construction Unit, the pay items for "___ Dia. Drilled Piers in Rock" and "___ Dia. Drilled Piers Not in Rock" have been revised to "___ Dia. Drilled Piers Not in Soil" and "___ Dia. Drilled Piers in Soil." Payment will still be made per linear foot (meter). Additionally the name of the pay item for permanent steel casing has been revised to "Permanent Steel Casing for _____ Dia. Drilled Pier" paid for in linear feet (meters).
If directed by the Soils and Foundation Section, a special structure pay item for "SID Inspection" will be required and paid for per each. If required by the Foundation Recommendations, structure pay items for "Crosshole Sonic Logging" and "CSL Tubes" shall also be included and paid for per each and linear feet (meters), respectively.
To aid plan preparation, the Soils and Foundation Section will include a table indicating the required pay items, and associated quantities, to be included in the Bill of Material. For pay items dependent upon top of drilled pier elevation, the table illustrates how to calculate the required length of permanent steel casing, drilled pier in soil, and CSL tubes. An example of this table is attached.
The Soils and Foundation Section will no longer use the 2nd and 7th notes under "Drilled Piers" on page 5-8 of the Design Manual. However, several new standard notes may be required by the Foundation Recommendations as follows:
Slurry construction shall be used for this project. See Drilled Piers Special Provision.
SID inspections are required to determine the bottom cleanliness of the drilled piers at Bent No. ____ and Bent No. ____. See Drilled Piers Special Provision.
SID inspections are not required to determine the bottom cleanliness of the drilled piers at Bent No. ____ and Bent No.____.
CSL testing is required for the drilled piers at Bent No.____ and Bent No.____. See Special Provision for Crosshole Sonic Logging.
The Project Special Provisions and Standard Notes files will be updated in the near future. The Design Manual will be updated at a later date.
