Description: R-2562AA - CUMBERLAND COUNTY LOCATION: Bridge #21 on NC87 South of I-95.
ITEM(S) OF INTEREST: Existing structure has been open to traffic for several years. The bridge is exhibiting severe slope failure under the end bents and the pile foundation is exposed. The slope failure occurred after the project was accepted. Slope failure appears to be a result of high ground water.
Observations and Points of Discussion:
The majority of the end bent slope very damp due to subsurface water.
End slope sloughing off mostly on one side of the end bent.
Repairs performed to date have been ineffective.
It appears that the class of rip-rap slope protection was too small or not the appropriate size.
For some sites, such as this one, provisions for ground water drainage may be necessary.
