Bridge Replacement Units
Congress began the Special Bridge Replacement Program (SBRP) in 1970 making funds available for states to replace bridges on Federal Aid System Roads. In 1978 the SBRP was replaced with the Highway Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation Program (HBRRP) which increased the overall funding as well as making a portion of that funding available for non-Federal Aid System Roads.
Over the next several years, funding continued to increase and consequently the number of bridge projects increase as well. Planning for these projects was spread among several different units. In 1985 the Bridge Replacement Unit was created for the purpose of planning these projects with more consistency and efficiency as well as being a clearinghouse for inquiries on the Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation Projects.
Today the Bridge Replacement Unit continues to serve this function and as the Program has evolved, the unit has become more involved in coordinating with other branches to develop projects from their conception through to their construction.
