Welcome to the ARCHAEOLOGY SECTION of the North Carolina Department of Transportation

The Archaeology Section is part of the Human Environment Unit of the Project Development & Environmental Analysis Branch. This section is responsible for helping NCDOT and the Federal Highway Administration comply with the laws and regulations pertaining to archaeology and historic preservation. When highway projects will have an impact upon significant archaeological properties, this section works to minimize and mitigate those impacts so that the historic and prehistoric heritage of North Carolina is not lost through highway construction.
