Historic Architecture Group
Mission Statement:
To responsibly identify and evaluate significant buildings, structures, and landscapes and to integrate these findings into the transportation planning process in an environmentally sound manner.
A vital component in the planning and implementation of any NCDOT project is the identification and protection of significant historic architecture that could be affected by the proposed work. The Historic Architecture group, composed of professional architectural historians, examines and documents all historic buildings, structures, and landscapes located within the project area that are at least 50 years of age. These buildings are identified, analyzed, and evaluated to determine if any are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and to provide information for use in assessing the effect of the project on the resources. This information is also used to develop a plan of protection and mitigation of effects of the project on the properties. The buildings, structures, and landscapes that are determined to be eligible for the National Register are given special consideration in the planning and implementation of the proposed project.
