SECTION 400

TEMPORARY STRUCTURES

400-1 DESCRIPTION.

The work covered by this section consists of the construction, maintenance, and final removal of all temporary structures required for the maintenance of pedestrian, highway, and other traffic. Approaches to temporary structures are not a part of this work.

Temporary structures shall be constructed in accordance with the requirements of the plans, this section of the specifications, any other section of the specifications pertaining to the construction of any part of the structure, and any applicable special provisions.

Traffic over the temporary structure shall be maintained in accordance with Division 11.

400-2 MATERIALS.

Materials used in temporary structures shall conform to the requirements of Division 10 of these specifications. Materials not covered by Division 10 may be used, provided approval for their use has been obtained from the Engineer before the materials are used. Previously used material conforming to the requirements of these specifications will be permitted. Untreated timber may be used unless otherwise required by the plans or special provisions.

400-3 PLANS.

(A) Furnishing Plans:

When the project plans furnished by the Department include plans for the structure, the Contractor may at his option, either use these plans or submit to the Engineer for review and comment one set of design calculations and 11 sets of detail drawings of his design in accordance with Subarticle 400­3(B).

When the project plans furnished by the Department do not include detail plans for the structure, the Contractor shall design the structure and shall furnish one set of design calculations and 11 sets of detail drawings of the structure in accordance with Subarticle 400­3(B).

Detail drawings and design calculations for temporary structures shall be submitted to the Engineer for review and comment prior to beginning work. No work shall be done until the detail drawings have been reviewed and accepted by the Engineer. Acceptance of such drawings shall, however, not be considered as relieving the Contractor of any responsibility for safely and continuously maintaining traffic.

(B) Design Requirements for Contractor Furnished Drawings:

Temporary structures shall be of such carrying capacity, dimensions, grades, and alignment as required by the plans or special provisions, or as directed by the Engineer.

Temporary structures carrying highway and pedestrian traffic shall be designed in accordance with the AASHTO "Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges". The temporary structure shall be designed and detailed by a North Carolina registered Professional Engineer, and construction of the temporary structure shall be in accordance with plans prepared by such Engineer.

The Contractor shall indicate on his plans the specifications for the materials to be used in the temporary structure.

400-4 CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS.

Temporary structures shall be constructed and maintained in such a manner that they will adequately and safely carry traffic during the entire period for which they are required.

After the temporary structures are no longer required they shall be removed and disposed of by the Contractor in accordance with Article 402­2.

All material furnished by the Contractor for use in a temporary structure shall, upon removal of the temporary structure, become the property of the Contractor unless otherwise provided in the special provisions.

Temporary piling shall be removed to the stream bed level or to 1 foot below existing ground.

400-5 COMPENSATION.

The work covered by this section will be paid for at the contract lump sum price for "Construction, Maintenance, and Removal of Temporary Structure at Sta.______________". Such price and payment will be full compensation for all work covered by this section including but not limited to furnishing any design calculations and drawings that may be required; furnishing members and deck materials for structures, and any other materials that may be necessary; erecting temporary structures; maintaining structures; and removal and disposal of structures.
