The Table of Contents for this section is available.
The work covered by this section consists of furnishing and erecting precast-prestressed concrete bridge members other than piling. It also includes the furnishing, galvanizing, placing, and painting, as applicable, of bearing components, anchor bolts, diaphragm bars, washers, nuts, and all other items necessary to complete the erection in accordance with the requirements of the plans and specifications.
When used in this section, the term "prestressed concrete" will refer to precast, pretensioned, prestressed concrete.
All materials shall meet the requirements of Division 10 shown below:
Precast-prestressed members Section 1078
Plain steel bars, threaded ends Article 1074-2
Structural steel Section 1072
Reinforcing steel Section 1070
Zinc rich paint Article 1080-9
Bearing plate assemblies Article 1072-5
Special care shall be taken in handling, transporting, and storing prestressed members. Members damaged while being handled or transported will be rejected unless they can be repaired to the satisfaction of the Engineer.
Members shall be handled at the bearings or at pick-up points designated on the plans unless other methods are approved in writing by the Engineer.
Prestressed concrete bridge girders shall be transported in a horizontal upright position. Points of support and directions with respect to the girder shall be approximately the same during transportation and storage as when the member is in its final position.
The methods and equipment used in installing prestressed members shall be such that a satisfactory installation will be obtained.
430-5 BEARINGS AND ANCHORAGES.
Steel sole plates shall be set level in exact position and shall have full and even bearing on the bearing pad.
Anchor bolts shall be accurately set in accordance with the provisions of Subarticle 42014(A).
When welding the sole plate to the embedded plate in the girder, use temperature indicating wax pens, or other suitable means, to ensure that the temperature of the sole plate does not exceed 300 degrees F. Temperatures above this may damage the elastomer.
Prior to welding, grind the galvanized surface of the portion of the embedded plate and sole plate that are to be welded. After welding, damaged galvanized surfaces shall be repaired in accordance with Article 10766.
430-6 ERECTION AND INSTALLATION.
Prestressed concrete members shall be erected by methods which satisfy the handling requirements specified in Article 4303.
Field welding shall be done only when called for on the plans or when permitted by the Engineer. Welding shall be done in accordance with Article 107220.
When concrete is to be cast in contact with prestressed members, the surface of the member which will be in contact with the fresh concrete shall be thoroughly cleaned and wetted for a minimum of 2 hours just prior to casting the fresh concrete.
After all concrete has been cast and finished, the prestressed members shall be thoroughly cleaned.
All ungalvanized steel surfaces, such as tie rod ends, not encased in concrete shall be cleaned and painted with 2 coats of zinc rich paint in accordance with the provisions of Section 442. Hand or power tool cleaning shall be performed. The minimum dry thickness of each coat of paint shall be 1 1/2 mils.
The quantity of prestressed concrete girders to be paid for will be the number of linear feet of prestressed concrete girders estimated on the plans as being necessary to complete the project.
The quantity of prestressed concrete girders, determined as provided in Article 4308, will be paid for at the contract unit price per linear foot for "___________ Inch Prestressed Concrete Girders".
The above prices and payments will be full compensation for all work covered by this section including but not limited to furnishing precast-prestressed concrete bridge members, structural and reinforcing steel, miscellaneous hardware, paint, bearing assemblies, and all other materials; handling, transporting, and storing materials; furnishing erection drawings; painting; setting bearings and anchorages; and erecting and installing the bridge members and all other materials.
Payment will be made under:
