SECTION 650

COURSE, TYPE J-1

650-1 DESCRIPTION.

The work covered by this section consists of the construction of an open-graded asphalt plant mix friction course composed of a mixture of crushed aggregate, non-strip additive, and asphalt cement properly laid upon a prepared surface in accordance with these specifications and in conformity with the lines, grades, thickness, and typical sections shown on the plans.

650-2 MATERIALS.

All materials shall meet the requirements of Division 10 shown below:

Asphalt cement, Grade AC-20 (See Standard Special Provisions) Article 1020-2

Non-strip additive Article 1020-8

Coarse aggregate, Standard Size No. 78M Article 1012-1

Mineral filler Article 1012-1

Stone screenings Article 1012-1

At least 75 percent by weight of the aggregate retained on the No. 4 sieve shall have 2 or more fractured faces, and 90 percent by weight of the aggregate retained on the No. 4 sieve shall have 1 or more fractured faces. The percent of wear shall not be more than 45 percent as determined by AASHTO T96.

Prior to starting production of the mix, all aggregates shall be stockpiled for a sufficient period of time to facilitate the drainage of free moisture.

650-3 COMPOSITION OF MIXTURE.

The Contractor will be required to furnish the Engineer with the name of the supplier and shipping point of the coarse aggregate, mineral filler, stone screenings, asphalt cement, and non-strip additive he proposes to use.

A mix design will not be required for open-graded asphalt friction course. A job mix formula will be established by the Engineer for the particular materials the Contractor proposes to use in accordance with Article 6103, except that the job mix formula will show the aggregates to be used; and specify the percentage of asphalt cement, the percentage of non-strip additive to be added to the asphalt cement, the temperature at which the mixture is to be produced and placed, and the grade and rate of application of the tack coat if tack coat is required by special provisions.

The completed mixture shall be within the limits shown in Table 6501 and the requirements of the job mix formula.

The non-strip additive shall be added to the asphalt cement in accordance with Article 6223.

When a mix has been tested and has been found to be outside the mixture range shown in Table 6501, or the requirements of the job mix formula, the Engineer may require the removal from the road of any of this mix which has been placed and which is represented by the test results. All such mix which has been removed shall be replaced with plant mix which is within the mixture range and the requirements of the job mix formula at no cost to the Department.

650-4 CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS.

The asphalt plant mix shall be produced, transported to the site, and placed in accordance with the applicable requirements of Section 610, except as otherwise provided below.

The existing surface shall be cleaned in an acceptable manner prior to placement of any asphalt material.

Rolling of the friction course shall be as specified in Article 61010.

Any part of the finished friction course which shows non-uniform distribution of asphalt cement shall be removed and replaced at no cost to the Department.

650-5 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT.

The quantity of friction course to be paid for will be the actual number of tons of friction course which has been incorporated into the completed and accepted work. The friction course will be measured by being weighed in trucks on certified platform scales or other certified weighing devices.

650-6 BASIS OF PAYMENT.

The quantity of friction course, measured as provided in Article 6505, will be paid for at the contract unit price per ton for "Open-Graded Asphalt Friction Course, Type J-1".

Furnishing non-strip additive will be paid for as provided in Article 6225 for "Non-strip Additive".

Furnishing asphalt cement for the mix will be paid for as provided in Article 6205 for "Asphalt Cement for Plant Mix".

Furnishing asphalt laboratory facilities will be paid for as provided in Article 6153 for "Field Laboratory Rental, Asphalt Plant Mix".Asphalt Cement for Plant Mix".

The above prices and payments will be full compensation for all work covered by this section, including but not limited to producing, weighing, transporting, placing, and rolling the plant mix as specified in Section 610; furnishing the asphalt cement, non-strip additive, and all other materials for the plant mix; furnishing and applying tack coat as specified in Section 605; furnishing scales; maintaining the friction course until final acceptance of the project; and making any repairs or corrections to the friction course that may become necessary.

Payment will be made under:
