spacer spacer   Welcome

Welcome to the Model Research and Development Unit. Our Unit has responsibility for the following:

  1. To provide transportation modeling expertise to the Metropolitan Planning Organizations and municipalities within North Carolina as needed in order to meet the requirements in Section 134, Title 23, U.S. Code, NC General Statutes 136-66, and the 1990 Clean Air Act. This work includes, but is not limited to: (1) design and development of state-of-the-practice multimodal travel demand models; (2) integration of GIS tools and technologies into supply side forecasting, demand side forecasting, and transportation plan development; (3) development of technical modeling tools to facilitate the analysis of the existing transportation system through capacity analysis, multimodal alternatives, land use and transportation interactions, air quality determinations, environmental streamlining, and project level travel forecasts which are a vital input to the TIP development process.

  1. To serve as the Branch's technical experts in travel demand modeling, land use modeling, air quality modeling, TransCAD scripting language, GIS, statistical analysis, database tools, and mapping tools through identifying and developing tools for advancing the state of the art in these areas as well as providing individual technical guidance and assistance to Statewide Planning project engineers.

  1. To direct the development of complex regional multimodal travel models to include the Triangle, Triad, and Metrolina regions that will be used for detailed corridor studies, HOV analysis, toll analysis, and/or regional rail studies.

  1. To conduct high level research into travel demand modeling techniques, land use feed back loops, multimodal travel analysis, data enhancement techniques, and the development of model user interfaces.

  1. To provide GIS expertise in the area of travel demand modeling, land use modeling, air quality modeling, and the integration of GIS tools, technologies, and data structures into other areas of the branch.

  1. Coordinate training classes and serve as the liaison between NCDOT, the TransCAD software vendor, and the MPOs.

  1. To develop and implement best practices and standard operating procedures for travel demand modeling in North Carolina based on federal guidelines, state of the practice research, and local needs.

  1. To administer consultant contracts related to travel demand modeling, GIS, and data collection and analysis.
