Alternatives Under Study
Both long-term and short-term improvements are being evaluated as part of the US 64 Corridor Study. The goal of the long-term alternatives
is to convert the existing roadway to an expressway and freeway facility. The goal of the short-term improvements is to develop
smaller scale improvements that will aid in transitioning the corridor toward the long-term solution. Further information on each is
described below.
Long-Term Improvements
Long-term alternatives include a combination of strategies aimed at improving the movement of vehicles on US 64 within the study
area. These strategies will be implemented over an extended period of time and could include the following:
- Replacing signalized intersections with interchanges
- Increasing the distance between interchanges and intersections
- Closing access points (such as driveways or entrances)
- Using service roads for access to property
It should be noted that funding has not been programmed for the long-term alternatives. The long-term alternatives will be used to
preserve right-of-way for future projects and to guide development. Additional detailed analyses of long-term alternatives will be
performed as projects are funded.
The long-term alternatives will be shown at
Workshop #1
and the preferred long-term alternative will be presented at Workshop #2.
The preferred long-term alternative may be composed of different elements
from each of the alternatives based on community input and Corridor Study Team recommendations.
Workshop #2 is expected to be
held in October and
will be announced in a future newsletter and on the website.
Short-Term Improvements
Short-term alternatives include smaller scale strategies aimed at improving the traffic operations, efficiency, and safety of the corridor.
The short-term strategies may be implemented as funding becomes available or by private entities as the corridor develops. Short-term
strategies could include the following:
- Restricting movements from side streets onto US 64 to right turns only. This would require drivers to make a u-turn downstream in
order to travel in the opposite direction
- Improving traffic signal synchronization
- Reconfiguring intersections to improve traffic operations and safety
- Consolidating access points (such as driveways and side streets) onto US 64
The goal of the short-term improvements is to extend the useful life of the existing roadway and provide a safe facility that
allows for adequate traffic operation until such time that the long-term solutions are needed and can be funded.
The short-term alternatives will be presented at Workshop #2, which is expected to be held in October and will be announced in a
future newsletter and on the website.
