Having a Problem with Motorcycle Detection?
Since 1993, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has been using a special inductive loop design, called a “quadrupole” in all left turn and side street approaches. This “quadrupole” design concentrates the electromagnetic field in the center of the loop and thereby allows the sensitivity of the loop detector unit to be increased. There are still some of the older loops operating at intersections across the state. While the older rectangular loop designs allow some degree of sensitivity adjustment, increases in the sensitivity of the loop systems can have the undesirable side-effect of detection of vehicles in adjacent lanes, resulting in congestion and overall delays to the traveling public.
In an effort to improve the traveling experiences of motorcyclists, we have developed a method of reporting specific locations that may be marginal in providing detection of motorcycles. The Traffic Engineering and Safety Systems Branch will serve as a focal point for directing motorcyclists' reports of malfunctioning detection to the appropriate agency for further investigation and action. The NCDOT has 14 Divisions across the state, each being responsible for maintenance in their own geographic area. Municipalities are responsible for maintaining equipment at the intersections of their streets and some of the municipalities are reimbursed to provide maintenance of equipment at intersections on the State Highway System.
We will be happy to assist you in getting your concerns passed along to the appropriate agency if you will provide us information about the intersection, identifying its location by street names, route numbers (if known) and county, indicate the nature of the problem and specify the exact location of the questionable detection zone. You can email this information to us at:
