Adopt-A-Highway Adopt-A-Highway:
The AAH program is administered by the NCDOT Office of Beautification Programs, and is a joint effort between community volunteers and the NCDOT. Its purpose is to decrease the amount of litter on North Carolina's roadsides and improve the beauty and quality of the environment.

Litter Sweep Litter Sweep:
Litter Sweep is a statewide roadside litter cleanup drive sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). It is a biannual event usually scheduled for the last two weeks of April and September.

Butterfly Program Butterfly Program:
Due to changing land-use much of the milkweed necessary for the Monarch's migration pattern is disappearing from our landscapes. The Roadside Environmental Unit agreed to research the issue, and as a result, the "Monarch Butterfly Program" is being implemented.

NC Keep America Beautiful NC Keep America Beautiful:
North Carolina Keep America Beautiful (NCKAB) is a nonprofit public education organization dedicated to enhancing the natural beauty of North Carolina communities, improving waste handling practices and empowering individuals to take greater responsibility for improving community environments.

Enhancement Program Enhancement Program:
Communities may compete every other year for Enhancement funding to implement non-traditional transportation projects that meet one of 12 eligible categories and have a link to surface transportation. Projects should improve a community's aesthetic, cultural, or environmental qualities.

State Street-Aid (Powell Bill) State Street-Aid (Powell Bill):
Annually, State street-aid (Powell Bill) allocations are made to incorporated municipalities which establish their eligibility and qualify as provided by G.S. 136-41.1 through 136-41.3. The general statutes require that a sum be allocated to the qualifying municipalities equal to the amount produced during the fiscal year by 1-3/4 cents on each taxed gallon of motor fuel.

Erosion Control Erosion Control:
The Soil and Water Engineering Section is responsible for designing erosion and sedimentation control plans for land disturbing activities by the DOT as well as developing design standards and training materials for erosion and sedimentation control.

Swat-A-Litterbug Swat-A-Litterbug:
The Swat-A-Litterbug Program is an educational effort administered by the Office of Beautification Programs within the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Landscaping Landscaping:
The Landscape Design & Development section assists in the preservation and enhancement of, and mitigation of disturbances to, the natural and built environment along North Carolina roadways.

Wildflower Program Wildflower Program:
The North Carolina Department of Transportation Wildflower Program began in 1985 as an integral part of highway beautification. Wildflower beds are installed and maintained across the state by Roadside Environmental personnel in each of the fourteen highway divisions. Many of these beds are marked by the wildflower sign pictured above.

Litter Prevention Contest Litter Prevention Contest:
The purpose of this event is to promote a perpetual cultural evolution in taking ownership of our environment by actively participating in ongoing program(s) of litter prevention.

Bicycle Bicycle:
The Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation (DBPT) is a comprehensive operation, touching all aspects of bicycling and walking; whether designing facilities, creating safety programs, mapping cross-state bicycle routes, training teachers, sponsoring workshops and conferences, fostering multi-modal planning or integrating bicycling and walking into the ongoing activities of the Department of Transportation.

Ferry Ferry:
Today, more than 2.5 million passengers and 1.1 million vehicles are transported annually on 23 vessels serving seven routes along the coast. More than a vital transportation link, ferries also provide breath-taking views along miles of coastal scenery. By ferry, visitors can discover pristine beaches, world-class fishing, beautiful sunsets and countless unforgettable experiences along the North Carolina coast.

Scenic Byways Scenic Byways:
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has designated 45 Scenic Byways to give visitors and residents a chance to experience a bit of North Carolina history, geography and culture while raising awareness for the protection and preservation of these treasures.

Safety & Laws:

Fender Bender Law Fender Bender Law:
The "Fender-Bender" Law states that motorists involved in a minor, non-injury accident on a highway are required to move their vehicles to the shoulder of the road as quickly as possible. The act also authorizes law enforcement officials to remove, without liability, commercial truck cargo and other personal property interfering with traffic flow.

Safe Routes to School Safe Routes to School:
A program dedicated to educate, encourage and enable children in grades K-8 to walk and bicycle to school in an appealing and safe environment.

Governor's Highway Safety Program Governor's Highway Safety Program:
The mission of the Governor's Highway Safety Program is to promote highway safety awareness and reduce the number of traffic crashes in the state of North Carolina through the planning and execution of safety programs.

Traffic Safety Traffic Safety:
The Traffic Safety Unit is responsible for North Carolina’s Highway Safety Improvement Program, the Executive Committee for Highway Safety, North Carolina’s National Truck Network, Crash Data and Highway Safety Information and Statistics, Spot Safety program, Hazard Elimination program, Regional Traffic Operations and Investigations, and Safety Evaluations.

Litter Laws Litter Laws:
The current North Carolina anti-litter law, General Statute § 14-399 (2001-2002), includes both fines and community service time for both intentional and unintentional littering.

NCPass NCPass:
The NC Department of Transportation has launched NCPass a new transponder system to help monitor the weight and safety compliance of trucks on the state’s highways.

Move It On Over Move It On Over:
The "Move It On Over" campaign is an inter-agency effort to inform the public about current laws designed to improve safety for drivers and emergency response personnel on North Carolina highways.

Workzone Safety Workzone Safety:
In 1989, the North Carolina Work Zone Safety Program was created by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) in hopes to reduce fatalities in North Carolina work zones.
