Dedicated to improving the quality of life for North Carolina communities and citizens by promoting, fostering and administering the Enhancement Program
The creation of the Roanoke Canal Museum is a great project that revives the unique transportation history of the city of Roanoke Rapids. As the town is located close to the border with Virginia and the I-95 corridor, the Canal museum has attracted a host of tourists - even bicyclists during an annual cycling tour! The project not only reflects an important facet of transportation history, but also has a major economic impact on the local region. Many organizations are utilizing the facility for meetings as well as tours, including The Virginia Canal Society's annual conference.
In addition to rehabilitating the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway Depot, the City of Fayetteville has created an exciting and educational museum dedicated to the history of transportation in the region. The city of Fayetteville is located at the western edge of navigation of the Cape Fear River, was the terminus of the Fayetteville to Bethania Plank Road and the site of several railroad termini. All of these resources are explored in this exciting facility. The project has also served as one of the catalysts for millions of dollars in downtown investments and rehabilitations.
The town of Plymouth, located on the Roanoke River at the mouth of the Albemarle Sound, was a bustling small port in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The Maritime Museum, located in a former early twentieth-century industrial facility, illustrates the rich maritime trade that once existed in the small ports along coastal North Carolina.
