On March 29, 2007, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)-NC Division Office and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) hosted a group of over 100 attendees in a meeting to discuss transportation, conservation, and strategic resource planning efforts in North Carolina. Participants included leadership and staff from the FHWA, NCDOT, Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO), Rural Planning Organizations (RPO), and State/Federal resource agencies. Specifically, the purposes of the workshop were to:
  1. Educate resource agency, conservation, and transportation project liaison staff on integrated planning initiatives, concepts, and requirements:
    • Interagency Leadership Team (ILT) Goal 2
    • CTP/Integration project
    • Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) Final Planning Rule requirements
    • "Transportation Planning 101"
    • Common themes from July 2006 MPO/ILT Workshop
  2. Educate transportation planning staff on State and Federal agency strategic planning efforts, available data, mapping, and inventories.
  3. Develop possible approaches for coordinating State and Federal Agency strategic plans (conservation, wildlife protection, land management, etc.) and Long Range Transportation Plans (LRTPs).
  4. Develop a booklet/directory of State and Federal contact information and their available maps/data/inventories.
From this meeting, several summary documents were developed to help guide the participants on the best approaches to work together in a coordinated transportation planning process. Below are several workshop documents, presentations, and products:
