The department is currently developing an Environmental Management Plan (strategic plan) that will allow the department to focus on its customer needs and recognize when environmental success has been accomplished. NCDOT's Environmental Management Plan will assist the department in delivering our program in an environmentally responsible manner across all transportation modes. It will also:

• develop environmental objectives, goals and measures
• consolidate and integrate separate environmental initiatives, programs and practices
• measure environmental successes and its cost effectiveness
• institute continual improvement
• promote, reinforce and continue to institutionalize the already strong environmental ethic throughout the department

The Purpose of the EMP:

• To effectively incorporate all environmental aspects into a clear and concise plan that is workable, realistic and achievable
• To develop a means to communicate environmental success
• To document the investments (resources) made on environmental initiatives
• To recognize current and future environmental achievements
• "It's the right thing to do"
