Why is this project necessary?

The proposed project will improve traffic operations by providing an additional auxiliary lane (or lanes) to the exit ramp from I-540 to the westbound I-40. The proposed improvements to the exit ramp are considered necessary to accommodate traffic traveling along this section from west bound I-540 to west bound I-40.

Project Highlights:

  • An environmental planning study is currently being conducted in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act. The environmental compliance document is a Programmatic Categorical Exclusion (PCE), which is being prepared by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), for the Northern Wake Freeway Interchange Improvements at I-540 and I-40.

  • The project is listed in the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) as project number R-2000AF, formerly identified as STIP project number I-5104.

  • The project limits extend approximately 2 miles, from the interchange of I-540 with Aviation Parkway (SR 3097) in Wake County to the interchange of I-40 with Page Road (SR 1973) in Durham County.

In addition, the project is located near areas under the jurisdiction of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority, Town of Morrisville, and Research Triangle Park. Also, some property adjacent to the project corridor is owned by Wake County as part of the Crabtree Creek Watershed Project.
