Construction Progress Report

News & Updates:

I-77 northbound will be reduced to one lane and traffic shifted onto a temporary one-lane median detour from Mile Marker 71 to Mile Marker 73 until mid-May 2008. The northbound Rest Area at Mile Marker 73 will also be closed during this time. All northbound lanes will be open to traffic by May 17, 2008. After May 17, 2008 there are no long term northbound lane closures anticipated through the Summer of 2008. Both southbound lanes are currently shifted onto a 2-lane median detour from Mile Marker 79 to Mile Marker 73 due to continued construction of the new concrete roadway on the existing southbound lanes. There are no long term southbound lane closures anticipated through the Summer of 2008.

Why is this project necessary?

This project will provide a new concrete surface, wider shoulders and a new guardrail on I-77 due to the deteriorated condition of the existing concrete pavement.

Project Highlights:

  • This 6.5-mile project in Yadkin County stretches from South of Asbury Church Rd. (State Road 1125) to U.S. 21.
  • Work will consist of overlaying the existing concrete pavement with a thin layer of asphalt and 11" of concrete pavement.
  • The project also includes new pavement on the ramps and loops at U.S. 421 as well as wider paved shoulders and new guardrail throughout the project.
  • Temporary median widening is required in the northbound direction to allow construction to proceed while minimizing the length of time for traffic to be reduced to one lane in each direction.
  • Upon completion of the project, traffic will be returned to a 4-lane pattern with a new concrete surface.
