Construction Progress Report

News & Updates:

Potential impacts for the five preliminary alternative corridors, as well as input provided by the public and local officials, were presented to the Project Team on August 15, 2006 in order to identify alternatives to be carried on for further study. After reviewing the benefits and drawbacks of the preliminary alternative corridors, the project team agreed that all five corridors provided unique benefits, and should be carried on for further detailed study. The detailed studies have recently been initiated and are scheduled to be completed by the winter of 2009 and the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the project, which will document the results of these studies, is scheduled to be completed in early 2010. Preliminary designs for the five alternative corridors are currently under development.

Project Schedule:

Why is this project necessary?

The project will improve traffic flow and service, improve safety, and reduce conflicts between through traffic and local traffic along NC 109.

Project Highlights:

Directional crossovers with offset left turns are proposed for many of the major intersections. They provide a safer facility by reducing the number of conflict points. Travellers on secondary roads may make direct right turns onto NC 109. Left turns are accomplished by making a U-turn at a median opening approximately one quarter mile from the intersection. Travellers on NC 109 can make direct right turns onto secondary roads.

While this type of intersection would not be adequate for all of the intersections along the project, it is well suited to the rural characteristics of much of the project area. In this setting, directional crossover can reduce the number of traffic conflict points, improving safety and allowing for improved traffic flow along NC 109.

Agency Coordination

Procedures for the participation of Federal, state, and local agencies at key decision-making points in the development of transportation projects have been developed. For more information please see the Full Agency Coordination Document

Study Process

The proposed improvements to NC 109 will involve state and federal funds. Any agency that proposes a project involving federal funds must comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). For more information please see the Full Study Process Document

Other Highlights

  • NCDOT proposes to improve NC 109 between Old Greensboro Road in Davidson County and I-40/US 311 in Winston-Salem.
  • One alternative corridor would improve existing NC 109, with a bypass west of the town of Wallburg. The other four alternatives are mainly on new location.
  • Two of the five alternatives would tie into US 52, terminating just east of the existing interchange of South Main Street and US 52. The other three alternatives would tie into I-40, terminating at the southern end of the existing interchange of NC 109 and I-40.
  • Municipalities within the project area include the Town of Wallburg and a portion of the City of Winston-Salem.
