Adding a Turn Lane

Option B proposes adding a turning lane for vehicles traveling northbound on US 15-501 turning left onto Erwin Road. This option is consistent with the original highway project proposal included in NCDOT's Transportation Improvement Program in 1999. The picture below shows a visualization of how the intersection would look with an additional turn lane. Scroll down for more information and analysis for this option.

Information and Analysis for Option B

Option B would add a second turning lane for vehicles traveling northbound on US 15-501 turning left onto Erwin Road. As a part of this option, the short access point that currently connects the service road to northbound US 15-501 south of this intersection would be closed for safety concerns. This project is expected to cost $900,000 to complete and would not involve the addition of any bicycle facilities or pedestrian crossings.

An analysis of the expected traffic operations show that this project would be over capacity almost immediately after construction is completed. This option would help to decrease congestion along the corridor; however, significant back-ups and delays would still occur at this intersection.
