The US 15-501 & Erwin Road/Europa Drive Intersection Improvement Project is proposed to improve the operations of the intersection, particularly for vehicles traveling off of US 15-501 and onto Erwin and Europa Drives. This page explains the need for this project, the process NCDOT is currently undergoing to study the project and a quick explanation of the project alternatives being considered.


Project Need/Purpose

This project has been proposed to upgrade the intersection of US 15-501 and Erwin Road/Europa Drive. This proposal is expected to reduce traffic congestion, improve capacity and improve safety in the vicinity of the intersection. As a result, this project will address safety concerns, reduce idle emissions and reduce drive times through the area. In future studies, NCDOT will be looking at additional projects that will address the long-term traffic growth along the US 15-501 corridor.


Project Study Process

In addition to the transportation objectives of this proposed project, NCDOT must meet local, state and federal regulatory requirements to protect the natural
and human environments. The department also is committed to delivering projects with the least possible disruption to commuters, businesses and residents
in the area of the project. In the interest of meeting these requirements and determining how best to accomplish the project objectives, NCDOT is conducting Planning and Environmental Studies for the project.


Project studies include Public Participation on the project. Public meetings and small group discussions with property owners along the project have been held and a public hearing to further discuss the proposed project will be scheduled in late September 2003.


Project Alternatives

Three alternatives are being examined for the project. This includes Option A, which proposes making no changes to the US 15-501 and Erwin Road intersection. Both Option B and Option C propose changes to the intersection. Option B would add a turning lane for vehicles traveling from northbound on US 15-501 turning left onto Erwin Road. Option C proposes a new Superstreet design that creates an elongated traffic circle to circulate traffic more efficiently through the intersection.
