News & Updates:Public InvolvementMay 6, 2004 Community Meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Central Carolina Community College. Approximately 21 people attended this meeting. At the meeting, NCDOT representatives explained the project's history, Purpose and Need for the project, and the proposed schedule. Mapping, including the layout of the project study corridors, was displayed. The meeting attendees were given an opportunity to view the maps and ask questions. Comment sheets were distributed for citizens to provide their input about the project to NCDOT. November 6, 2003 Citizens Informational Workshop from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Northwood High School Cafeteria.Approximately 238 people attended this meeting. Ten alternative study corridors were presented at the meeting in an open-house style. Individuals were given the opportunity to view the alternative corridors, make comments, and ask questions about the project. NewslettersWhy is this project necessary?Purpost & NeedThe need for a bypass around Pittsboro was first identified over 36 years ago. Currently, north-south travel along US 15-501 requires traffic to utilize the downtown traffic circle that surrounds the historic Chatham County Courthouse. Congestion and travel delays are experienced at the traffic circle during peak travel hours. It is anticipated that congestion will substantially increase as travel demand and growth continues in Chatham County . Additionally, more accidents occur at intersections with and along US 15-501 in Pittsboro than at intersections located farther away from the traffic circle and downtown Pittsboro. US 15-501 is designated as a truck route. Many conflicts occur between automobiles, trucks, pedestrians in and around the traffic circle. All of these factors contribute to the congested and unsafe conditions along US 15-501 in Pittsboro. The proposed project will improve these conditions by removing truck through-traffic from the downtown areas and decreasing vehicular traffic volumes. Project Highlights:Current StatusThe US 15-501 Corridor Improvements Project (TIP Project No. R-2628) is unfunded in the current Transportation Improvement Program.
